trek: pope farm conservancy

Summertime in Madison is resplendent. Where else can you tuck in a morning hike wearing long sleeves on the first day of July? If you're looking for a kid-friendly trek that's not too long, not too short, rambling, green, tranquil, and scenic, head over to Pope Farm Conservancy. Today the clouds almost touched the fields!

Pope Farm became a conservancy in 2000 when the Art Pope family reached an agreement with the Town of Middleton to protect the 105 acre park from development.

The grounds sit atop three recessional moraines (small ridges left after a glacier's retreat) where three watersheds come together. The heights offer panoramic views; the gullies wild prairie plants. The eight miles of walking trails and picnic areas are woven among seven different crops, shaded woods, windswept grasses, and wildflowers.
