trek: ice age national scenic trail table bluff segment

Off-the-cuff morning adventures are my jam. The kind where I toss a few water bottles, a couple juice boxes, some snacks, and sunscreen into the old backpack and we're off. First stop. Coffee and baked bits. Today we grabbed caffeine and cinnamon buns at Crossroads Coffeehouse in Cross Plains. It was the perfect early morning stop on the way to the Table Bluff Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail (Ice Age Trail) in Black Earth.

The Table Bluff Segment is accessible, kid-friendly and very pretty. A winding trail. Gobs of wild raspberries. Oodles of wildflowers: prairie blazingstar, goldenrod, arrowhead, coneflowers, bishop's lace. Hillocks. Woods. Singing birds. Bleating goats. The trail is 2.5 miles straight, making a five mile out-n-back.

The Ice Age Trail as a whole is a 1,200 mile footpath entirely in Wisconsin and is one of eleven national scenic trails. The Table Bluff Segment is straight through Cross Plains on Highway 14. Turn right on KP. Turn left on Table Bluff Road. The parking lot is right before the farm with the charming red barn. Listen for the tuck-tuck of the chickens.
